13 October 2005: Backward by Fives

Much to write, little time to write it. Hit that point where I was too sleepy to do homework, so I made my nightly Internet rounds, checking friends' journals, and found Yoko's entry for this evening, with another one of those blogging memes that periodically make the rounds: what were you doing five minutes ago, five hours ago, five days ago, five months ago, five years ago?

Figured this was a fine excuse to do a brief token entry so you'd know I was still around.

Token Entry was the name of a hardcore band when I was in high school. They were named after the signs by the turnstiles in the New York City subway; t-shirts for the band were copies of the signs, including the arrow that, on the original signs, pointed at the turnstiles, but which, when worn on a t-shirt, pointed at the crotch of whoever was standing next to the wearer.

I don't know if there are still "Token Entry" signs in the New York City Subway. I don't even know if the New York City Subway still uses tokens.

But I digress.

Five minutes ago, I had already started this entry. I'm sleepy, and writing slowly.

Five hours ago, Dragon Lady and I were eating delicious roasted ginger-mustard-basted chicken and fried plantains at a Ghanan restaurant a block from our apartment.

Five days ago, I saw Mirrormask with Dragon Lady, Bonky, Fandango, and a friend of Dragon Lady's from New York City who I could have asked about the subway tokens if I'd had any reason to think of it at the time. I'd already heard enthusiastically positive reviews of the movie from both Sherpa and Lila. I share their enthusiasm, as did everyone I saw it with. It's beautiful. See it. Especially you, Ace. (And Happy Birthday!)

Five months ago, I was nearing the end of the Spring semester, writing a paper on Cato the Elder, and rehearsing for Requiem for a Friend.

Five years ago, I was working in the QA department at the Internet search engine company Ask Jeeves, beginning the paratheatrical Dreaming Lab, and beginning the long, ugly slide into the psychic breakdown from which I would emerge moving in a new direction that would eventually clarify into my present course.

And you?
